The
Free Eye Camps we conduct are camps, in which we, with the
help of a team of Doctors from Mumbai, perform IOL operations
for the local people. This year the Free Eye Camp was held at
Anandvan, Warora, District Chandrapur, in the month of
December (10th - 14th) 2004. Anandvan is a rehabilitation center
for Leprosy affected patients setup by Baba Amte in Warora
(an economically backward and tribal district). It is approximately
a 17 hour train ride away from Mumbai and its local language
is Marathi. Everything at Anandvan (from its maintainence to
making the furniture and cooking the food) is managed by the
leprosy patients. The camp was for seven days. The first two
day was reserved for diagnosis and preoperative preparations.
On the third and fourth day the patients were operated upon
by a team of qualified surgeons from J. J. Group of Hospitals
under the leadership of Dr. Shri T. P. Lahane, Head of Ophthalmology
Department. The fifth, sixth and seventh days were for the
dressings & discharge. On all these days the patient and one
of his/her relative, was provided with all the meals. Follow
up work after a month included final check up and provided free
numbered spectacles. All throughout those days the local doctors
and members of ICare carefully looked after the patients.
